UPIS wins the UAAP Basketball Crown

September 29, 2002

UPIS wins the 2002 UAAP basketball crown (junior division) by beating Ateneo 63-56 on their second outing in a best of three series for the finals. UPIS first trounced Ateneo on Thursday 72-67.

UPIS' victory last Thursday was a hard won one. Ateneo dominated the game until the last few minutes of the fourth quarter. Apparently, the junior maroons learned from their mistakes and practically dominated today's game except in the last few minutes of the fourth quarter when a rally by the blue eaglets threatened UPIS' lead.

This is the first time for UPIS to win the UAAP crown. This is also the first time UPIS ever made it to the finals. This prompted school officials to suspend regular classes Thursday in order to bring the entire high school population to the game (touting the activity as an alternative classroom learning experience). The Alumni Foundation paid for the the tickets (partially) and the busses used to transport the faculty and students (today's game included). A program outlining the Foundation's support for the team was established last year.

East Coast Reunion May 27, 2000 - from Marla

Yes, we had a great time last weekend. Eto ang Kuwento from U.P.I.S. Batch '81 East Coast Reunion 2000.

ATTENDEES: Joey and Rina Tomeldan-Tan from New Jersey, Arlene de Guzman from L.A., Lyndia Ordillas from Florida, Richard and Mia Michelena-Wimberley and their son George from Michigan, Arrene Caoili and daughter Sara from Pennsylvania, Bernadette Ramos with husband Venci and children Samantha and Matthew, Babs Gay Barcelo with husband Dennis, Leloy Santos-Cuyugan from Texas, Rene "Noki" Magsanoc from Vegas, Mike and Arnette Marbella from Boston, Ronald "Toktik" Villanueva and wife Nicolene, Ferdie de Leon from New York, Joe and Rorie Baladad-Dorneo, and Boris and Judy-Mae Pascasio-Ferdociw from New Jersey. Including my husband David and my 4 year old twin boys Marcus and Colin, there were 30 participants.

Arlene flew from L.A. Thursday night, so we were able to spend the whole day Friday together. Friday night Lyndia flew from Miami and Rina came with husband Joey, son Migi and Yaya Emma from Teaneck, New Jersey. Rina helped a lot in making sure the food was delicious and in abundance. She cooked the Kare-kare with baguong, marinated liempo and daing na bangus; I am so thankful we had an excellent cook in our group! We also had sinigang na baboy and broiled salmon. I had a cake made for the occassion and we had it with fresh fruit salad. The reunion officially started at 1 pm on Saturday, May 27. Although it rained, everybody had a good time including our respective children. My son Marcus said, "Mommy's school friends are so much fun. Can they all sleep here with us tonight?" Well, some did and others almost did. Naginuman hanggang alas dos ng umaga. We had Margaritas and Pina Coladas, and beer. Then when we moved the party from my screened-in porch into the house to give my neighbors some sleep, we had shots from 3 bottles of Pepe Lopez Gold Tequila courtesy of Rina and Joey. Si Ferdie de Leon and banka sa kuwento. Needless to say, we all had a late start the next morning.

For Sunday brunch, Patrick Viola, his wife Karen and their son Adam were able to join us from New Jersey. It was a beautiful sunny day and we all ate outside in my backyard. We had enseymada which Arlene brought from Goldilocks in L.A., Lechong manok, eggs and bacon and L.O.s from the night before, Arnette and Mike arrived with Ronald, Nicolene "Kukay" and Ferdie. Lyndia , Arlene and Rina & family were still here. Noki stayed overnight also. Mia and her family were present, too. Tuloy pa rin ang mga kuwento. Nung mukhang nauubusan na, naglabas ulit ng beer. We all had a blast. My husband David was very supportive and made sure I was having fun, too.

I really enjoyed hosting the party. It was so nice to see everyone again. Also. the batchmates who attended have pledged a minimum of Fifty U.S. dollars each towards our funds. We will write our checks to U.P.I.S. Batch '81 addressed to Arlene de Guzman's bank in L.A where she will open an account for us. I hope this gives inspiration to all our other batchmates abroad who want to have a get together. Leloy was our official photographer and he promised me some photos for the web by next week. After our last batchmate Arlene left early Monday morning I already started missing her! Both Lyndia and Arlene gave up a few days with their babies just to be here! Bernadette brought her new born baby Matthew with her and Kukay Villanueva's baby boy was just 10 days old. Our batch doctors, Arrene, Rorie and Judy Mae gave up their busy schedules. Leloy and Noki flew from thousands of miles away. Babs and Dennis drove for at least six hours, Arnette and her gang drove for at least 12 hours and Mia and her family for at least 24 hours, stopping overnight on the way. Friendship makes the world smaller.

Best regards, Marla

Dear UPIS 81

Please take a look at the ADOPT A UPIS ROOM project which we are putting in the UPIS web page. Then let me know soonest if the batch is interested in being a foster parent to a UPIS room. Class 77 has adopted the UPIS libraries already.

SF Bay Area Batchmates Mini Reunion - Sept 4, 1999
Click here to see photos => Set 1 + Set 2

Last Saturday, Sept 4th 1999, at Hellyer Park in San Jose, CA a few batchmates from the Bay Area got together for a little picnic. (The Bay Area is comprised of several Northern California cities surrounding San Francisco Bay.)

Rolly Perez, organized our mini reunion. Rolly's wife Arcie, daughters Abbey and Allison and son Justin, Al Yap and daughter, Karina (coincidentally, Al's wife was attending a HS reunion in the East Coast), Ben Lorica and wife Susan, Domann Cadaing, and I, Christine Alcoba Reyes along with hubby David and kids Keilah and Jamin, were in attendance. Jun Gaddi had planned on coming, but at the last minute had some urgent business to attend to in Mexico. We had a quiet picnic spot a few feet away from a lake with ducks, warm-but-not-too-hot weather, and a breeze when you needed it.

It was a potluck picnic that could've fed a dozen more folks. Al brought babyback ribs, Ben and Suz brought veggies with a peanut butter dip, Domann brought a whole cooler full of clams, the Perezes brought pancit, rice, tahong and pakwan, and we Reyeses brought chicken, hotdogs, and desserts. Even though Jun wasn't there, he sent some salmon via Rolly. Everything was grilled just right thanks to Al.

The time was spent eating, talking, playing with the kids, and taking pictures. (Click here to see pix => set 1 + set 2). It was a fun afternoon that just flew by, but the truth is, I didn't know these guys that well in high school. And I don't think I ever said 2 words to them back then. In fact, before the picnic, I had to look them up in my Sulyap to refresh my memory (as I'm sure they must've done too). But it didn't matter who we were or who we hung out with back then or who and what we are today. We had that UPIS '81 connection. And that was all we needed. - Christine Alcoba-Reyes
